It’s a question that’s asked and answered. Because of our diet, Americans experience a higher rate of disease than other developed countries. Even though this country is the most prosperous nation on earth.

The standard American diet can be characterized as being high in calories, portion size, and filled with refined processed foods. Also, the calories we consume comprises an extraordinary amount of animal products that’s produced using processes that are not considered natural.

The standard American diet, also known as S.A.D., leads to standard American death. Our bodies shouldn’t consume the chemicals used to produce our fruit, or the hormones injected into our meat. With the food we eat, it’s guaranteed that they will be high in trans fat and calories.

Some say a part of the reason American diets are so hazardous have a lot to do with the type of foods we consume. For example, fatty foods such as meat and processed foods takes up a large percent of our diet, while fruit, vegetables and whole grain is secondary. Also, when we consume vegetables, they are prepared incorrectly, or its carbs such as French fries.

There is no question, the standard US diet is dangerous to our health, and can shorten our lives. To make the point crystal clear, here is a short list of the typical American diet.

 The mainstay of most American Diets

  • High in processed foods
  • Small amount of fruit, seeds and nuts 
  • Moderate vegetables consumption
  • Low in fiber
  • High in sugar
  • Filled with hormones
  • Fruits and vegetables are usually sprayed with pesticide

There are other characteristics, but these are the main ones to consider.

Other immediate effect of the American diet

A poor diet effect is usually obvious to people who live in America and beyond our borders. The one most people quickly associate with the American diet is weight gain. Weight gain however is not the only effect of a poor diet. Studies have shown that unhealthy diets affect can be mental as well as physical. When we eat a diet high in refine carbs and saturated fats, it can cause anxiety and depression. In addition, it can contribute to degenerative diseases that appear as we age.

It’s obvious that the standard American diet will cause many health issues such as weight gain and negative effect on mental health. It’s time to take proactive steps to change our diets and enhance our health.

America is a country that thrives on convenience. That is why there are too many fast-food restaurants to count. To have better health, perhaps it’s time to not choose convenience. Instead, we may try to make food choices that contribute to our longevity and a vibrant life.
