Success habits are likely when you pick the ones that make sense in your life and embrace them by making them a part of your life.

We are what we repeatedly do is a part of the quote. That’s what I’m thinking about when considering these success habits I’m about to share. If you pick the ones that make sense in your life and adapt them and make them become a part of your life. In time, they will become subconscious acts that will, without a doubt, help you achieve the things you want.

While reading or listening to these success habits, ask yourself three questions:

  • Is it right for me?
  • How can I adapt to it and make it my own?
  • Will It make a difference?

The purpose of asking these questions isn’t because I suggest them, but because of one simple fact. We are all solitary. We have a life that is uniquely our own. With self-development, or building success habits, there is no one size fits all. It’s about what you know and using that knowledge to create and implement a plan that works for you.

Here are 10 of the Success habits. Listen to podcast episode 17 for all the success habits.

1. Know what you want

It’s one thing to tell ourselves we want to achieve certain goals or objectives. It’s another to achieve it. The reality is what you want doesn’t matter. Sure, a personal aim is important in that you want to achieve it. However, what’s really important is how resolute you are, how determine your are to achieve the results you want.

You and I both know how hard it is to identify what you want and to develop laser-like focus to achieving it. That is why it makes sense that the first and ultimate success habit worth mastering is knowing exactly what you want and how you plan to get it.

2. Help others succeed

There is an advantage to why it’s important to help others. Consider that some of the greatest achievements results from helping others. When you choose to focus on the needs of others, the reward is not so much that helping is something you want to do, but that in helping others, you help yourself.

Here are examples of what I mean. I’m sure you’ve heard of Facebook. Did you know that Mark Zuckerberg’s initial goal with Facebook wasn’t to start a social media conglomerate, but to help students connect with each other effectively? In trying to solve a communication problem in college, he realized his solution had many other benefits. Facebook became a reality because he was trying to help others.

Here is another example. Chobani yogurt and Hamdi Ulukaya. It seems he realized that the grocery aisle needed healthier yogurt options that were more affordable. Hence Chobani yogurt, one of the most common yogurt in supermarkets today was born.

Now, I’m not saying that you would have the same result as Mark Zuckerberg and Hamdi Ulukaya. I am saying focusing on helping others succeed can clarify your path. Can make your efforts more fulfilling.

3. Balance work and personal life

Balancing work and personal life will effectively lead to a more successful life. Ask yourself, what would be the point of achieving success if you don’t have a life to enjoy it? A part of genuine success is realizing the value of having the best of both worlds, a personal and a work life.

Then there are the benefits. Consider that a balance life reduces stress, enhances your ability to focus, makes you more productive, and gives you a better chance to achieve success.

4. Follow a system that contributes to your effectiveness

An effective system is any system that helps to be more productive and get things done. For each of us, the right system is a matter of preference. For instance, for me, it’s all about tech. I love technology and I find that using tools such as Evernote, Dropbox, an iPad and my Mac, is the key to my productivity. You may be someone who subscribes to systems such as a bullet journal the way to go. Evaluate what systems you have in place, what will work for you for your daily effectiveness, and implement a system that can help you succeed.

5. Focus on the present, not the past or the future

Our past is important because it helps to define us. Our future is valued because it signals where we want to go. The present, however, is more important than our past or our future, because what we do now determines the course of our life. Our action now won’t affect our past, but if we are not careful, we can create a future other than what’s intended. So, stay present, let go of the past, and work on now to build the future you want.

6. Minimize distractions

We live in a society full of distractions. In fact, eleven minutes, that’s the typical time we experience a distraction. And reducing that number isn’t an easy feat. Consider the things that contribute to our distraction. I will give just one example. The smart phone. There was a time when our phone serves on purpose. These days, it’s not just for talking. We use it for texting, communicating via email to be social. Now, having a smartphone won’t prevent you from achieving your aim. It will certainly make it harder if you are one of those people who would literally die if they walk out their door without their phone.

I am not ashamed to share that I am one of those. I am addicted to my phone and would not be a nice person if I forget my phone. Wait, let me backup and say that if I forgot my phone, I would turn back to get it. Now you are thinking, so would I. But, I may have you beat when I say that if I had an important appointment, if I had a flight to catch, If Elon Musk the man that’s classified as the richest man in America today, said be at my office at 1:00 pm and I will give you a million dollars and I forgot my phone, and knew I would be a minimum of ten minutes later, I would turn back to get my phone.

I think I’m saying don’t be like me. Focus on the million dollars, on what’s important.

7. Follow daily habits

If you listen to this podcast regularly, then you know that episode 12 is all about some of the daily habits to implement that can change your life. Daily habits are probably the most untapped resource you can use to achieve the things you want. With the right daily habits, you not only open yourself to your true intentions, you also create the foundation for achieving your goals. Habits, such as setting goals, adapting an open mindset, waking up early, or consistently mapping out your day, signals your willingness to do what it takes. It’s yet another technique that surely leads to success.

8. Practice self-care

What is self-care? It’s the choices that’s defined by your personal preferences. Even though self-care can be different for you and others. Its definition is unique for each of us. You can better understand it by seeing it as acceptance without resistance. We take care of ourselves when we choose to think and act according to our needs. Self-care is self-love and you must learn to love yourself in order to implement self-care.

Examples of self care: would be to eat healthily, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep. Remember this about self care. It’s a way to connect with you, which will make you more confident, more intuitive regarding the choices and decision you make.

9. Be Responsible

When you say you are going to do something, do you do it? Or do you make excuses why it didn’t or couldn’t get done? A true judge of character and strength is your ability to keep your word. If you say you’re going to do something, do it. What good are you without the ability to be responsible for your actions and the words you speak?

10. Embrace your failures

Those of you who understand the importance of embracing failures will totally get these words by C. S. Lewis “Failures, repeated failures, are finger posts on the road to achievement. One fail forward towards success.”

Embrace the thing that teaches you to grow.
