Learning how to deal with setbacks is crucial to not just our well-being, but to whether we get to achieve the things we want in life.

Have you ever had the experience of a setback?

I’m sure you have, because we all experience it. It doesn’t matter how hard we try, setbacks are a normal part of life. With the setbacks we experience, it’s how we deal with them and overcome then, that embodies its relevance in our lives. The reality is setbacks can have a negative effect, and learning how to deal with them is crucial to not just our well-being, but to whether we get to achieve the things we want in life.

When I experience setback, I have this mantra I like to say to myself. It’s one word. SHIFT.

Have you ever driven a manual car? My shift mantra is an analogy about driving a manual car. My very first car was a manual transmission. I loved driving it. I loved the connection I had with the car, knowing that if I wanted to get to a certain speed, I needed to shift the gear.

When you are driving a manual car, as you increase speed and I am not talking about speeding, you need to shift. You start in the first gear and before you get to 30 mph; you are shifting to the 2nd gear. By the time you get to the average MPH, which depending on where you live and if you are on a parkway or in a residential area, you are in at least the 3rd gear or 4th gear. When you drive a manual car, you can’t bypass a gear. You must start in the first, then the next and the next, until you get to your desired speed.

Are you already understanding why I love my SHIFT mantra?

When you experience a setback, the absolute best and only way to deal with it effectively is one step at a time. One shift at a time.
